Among all the G7 countries, Canada has had the highest population growth. This growth can be attributed to the new immigration policies of the Canadian government that make it easier for immigrants from foreign countries to become Canadian citizens.
Immigration responsible for population growth in Canada
Among the 1.8 million people newly included in the Canadian population, four out of five were either an immigrant holding permanent status or temporary residents. The rest of the population growth is due to the natural increase, which is the difference between the number of births and the number of deaths.
Immigration has been a significant factor contributing to the growth in population since the 1990s. The Canadian fertility rate is not enough to increase its population. It has been a matter of concern for Canada like its other G7 counterparts.

Population growth in Canada
Within Canada, the population of Yukon witnessed the fastest growth from 2016 to 2021. The increase was mainly due to immigration. British Columbia and Prince Edward Island saw the highest growth rates among the Canadian provinces.
On the other hand, Newfoundland and Labrador was the only province that saw a decrease in its population. The population in the Maritimes region grew faster than the Prairies region from the 1940s.
Compared to the rural areas, the urban areas saw more population growth. Immigrants would opt for settling in cities than the rural regions. According to the Census of 2021, a total of 6.6 million Canadians live in rural areas, and it saw a rise of 0.4 percent in its population growth from the previous five years. In comparison, the urban region saw an increase of 6.3 percent in the same period.
