Canada has become a popular destination for Indian students like the USA and the UK. Students want to study in Canada as the immigration process is easy and the cost of studying is affordable. The current wait time for getting a student permit is usually 12 weeks. But now students can get the permit within 9 weeks.
Student Direct Stream
Students from India can get their work permits at a fast pace through the Student Direct Stream. The processing time of most of the Student Direct Stream applications is 9 weeks. Here are the things that students have to do for faster processing of their applications:
- Biometrics has to be submitted in the shortest possible time.
- All the eligibility criteria have to be fulfilled to get a study permit and study in Canada
Eligibility for the SDS stream
Students have to meet certain eligibility criteria to submit an application through Student Direct Stream. They must have received an acceptance letter that has been issued by a post-secondary designated learning institution. Students have to be outside Canada while sending the application. The other eligibility criteria are as follows:
- Students have to prove that they have paid the tuition fee for the first year of study
- Students need to have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of CAD $10,000
- Students should have a Quebec Acceptance Certificate issued by Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration. This criterion is eligible only if students have plans to study in Quebec.
- Students need to go for a medical examination before sending the application
- Students need to submit a police certificate before applying

Process to apply for Student Direct Stream
Candidates have to apply online for the fast processing of their study permits. The option of paper application is not available for the Student Direct Stream. All the requirements should be included in the application. After the application fee is submitted, candidates will receive a letter in which it is mentioned that biometrics is needed. This letter will be sent if the application does not include the biometrics.
Candidates need to bring this letter along with their passports for their biometrics within 30 days. After the submission of the biometrics, the 20-day processing time starts.
