László Andor, Brussels outgoing in charge of immigration, said that EU migration is "a minor issue" and held freedom of movement laws pressed by Britain responsible for it. Mr. Andor expressed his displeasure over the British governments from the past for extension of EU borders and for setting the freedom of movement rules.
He added that Britain will witness a surge in migrants from the Eurozone in the coming years citing the current crisis in the Southern Eurozone and the increase in number of students preferring to study abroad.
As published in the Telegraph, by Mathew Holehouse, a Political Correspondent, Mr. Andor said that, "Overall the intra-EU mobility is very modest. It’s about three per cent of the entire EU workforce which works in another member state than their home country. It is a very really a minor issue."
Commenting on the opportunities for workers in Southern Europe, he said that Britain should take steps to address their concerns and ensure proper support and flow of opportunities is provided to them.
László Andor is a Hungarian economist and has been in the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development earlier and represented Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovakia.
