Nova Scotia experiencing manpower shortages in food services

Nova Scotia, the most enjoyable place to work in Canada, is currently accepting immigration applications of the foodservice workers under the Occupations in Demand stream.

Due to the pandemic dip, all the restaurants were shut down and had a hard hit. Even though the country's economy is resuming back to its normal state, few sectors like the food industry still face labor shortages.

In order to fulfill the labor market needs, Nova Scotia added three more new roles in its Occupations in Demand immigration stream. These include:

  • NOC 6513 - Food and beverage servers
  • NOC 6711 - Food counter attendants, kitchen helpers, and related support occupations
  • NOC 6731 - Light duty cleaners

  • In this, employers are allowed to hire the workers without attending the Labor Market Impact Assessment (LIMIA).
  • The employees are also allowed to apply for Nova Scotia’s Provincial Nominee Program without the requirement to work with the employer for six months.
“We’re excited to welcome newcomers who can help employers meet their labor needs and grow Nova Scotia’s population,” Jill Balser, Nova Scotia’s immigration minister, said in the release. “The tourism, restaurant and hospitality sectors are critical to our economy. These changes will help these industries hire the workers they need to prepare for a busy tourism season.”

Nova Scotia’s Occupations in demand stream

This stream targets specific occupations under the NOC skill levels C and D. These are called “low-skilled” or “unskilled” occupations. But after the pandemic hit, these are placed in the “essential” occupations list.

Due to the increased immigration in 2021, Nova Scotia's population was recorded as an all-time high of 992,055.
