Beginning May 4, 2021, the U.S. will be suspending entry into the country in the capacity of nonimmigrants, of noncitizens that had been physically present within India during the 14-day period preceding their “entry or attempted entry into the United States”.
This is as per a recent Proclamation – A Proclamation on the Suspension of Entry as Nonimmigrants of Certain Additional Persons Who Pose a Risk of Transmitting Coronavirus Disease 2019 – dated April 30, 2021.
| The Proclamation, effective at 12:01 am EDT on May 4, 2021, shall “remain in effect until terminated by the President”. |
Students from India, however, will be exempt from the India travel ban by the U.S.
The imposition of restrictions on travel from India will prevent most non-U.S. citizens from entering the country for an indefinite period starting May 4, laying down the COVID-19 pandemic situation in India.

As per the State Department, the India travel ban exemption is in keeping with a similar exemption that the U.S. has earlier granted to certain categories of travellers from China, Iran, South Africa, and Brazil.

According to the State Department, “Secretary Blinken decided today to apply the same set of National Interest Exceptions to India that he had previously applied to all other regional travel restrictions currently in effect as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
