Despite a massive land mass of 483,450 kilometers, Yukon has a relatively small population of around 40,000 people.
YUKON PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM
Previously known as Yukon Territory, Yukon lies in the north-western corner of Canada.
Bounded to the east by Northwest Territories, the US state of Alaska lies to the west of Yukon. While the Canadian province of British Columbia is the neighbour to the south, Yukon extends northwards to the Beaufort Sea.
Yukon traces its name to the Gwich’in aboriginal word Yu-kun-ah meaning “great river”, referring to the 3,190 kilometers long Yukon River.
Despite a massive land mass of 483,450 kilometers, Yukon has a relatively small population of around 40,000 people.
As per the Population Report [Third Quarter 2020] of the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, the estimated population of Yukon on September 30, 2020 was 42,507. |
Interestingly, the number of moose on the territory far outnumber the number of humans. It is estimated that there were approximately 70,000 moose in the territory, as against the 40,000 humans living in the same area.
The territorial capital lies at Whitehorse.
Other prominent cities in Yukon include – Faro, Carcross, Dawson, Carmacks, Watson Lake, Haines Junction, Pelly Crossing, Mt Lorne, and Ibex Valley.
Yukon is among the 9 Canadian provinces that are a part of the Provincial Nominee Program [PNP].
Yukon has its own immigration program – the Yukon Nominee Program [YNP] – for the induction of newcomers that intend taking up Canadian permanent residence and settling within Yukon.
Yukon PNP stream available | |
Stream | Description |
Yukon Express Entry [YEE] |
Aligned with the federal Express Entry system. While a connection to Yukon is not required, the candidate will be required to have a full-time, permanent job offer from an eligible employer in Yukon. Yukon employers – foreign workers cannot apply on their own – might apply to the Express Entry stream if the position that they are hiring for falls under NOC A, B, or 0 categories. |
Skilled Worker |
For skilled foreign workers that wish to take up Canada PR through Yukon. Employers in Yukon might use this YNP stream for hiring foreign workers for positions that come under NOC A, B, or 0 categories. As this stream is not linked to the Express Entry system, an Express Entry profile will not be required. |
Critical Impact Worker |
Employers in Yukon might use this YNP stream for hiring foreign workers for positions that come under NOC C or D categories. |
Business Nominee |
For business owners and entrepreneurs that intend running their own business in Yukon. A 2-step application process that begins with the submission of an application form. Minimum 65 points to be scored in order to be assessed by the YNP. Successful candidates are then placed in a pool from which selections are made. Those selected can then proceed to submitting the supporting documentation. An in-person interview in Yukon is the final step of the process. |
Opened by the government of Yukon in January 2020, the Yukon Community Pilot [YCP] is a federal-territorial Canadian permanent residence stream that includes a work permit component.
The Yukon Pilot aims at attracting as well as retaining immigrants in the territorial communities through testing innovative approaches to Yukon immigration.
Under the Yukon Community Pilot, the entry of immigrants into Yukon is to be facilitated through the issuance of open work permits as per the International Mobility Program [IMP].
An individual that has a valid YNP nomination for Canada PR as well as 2/3 job offers from up to 3 employers based in a participating territory in Yukon might be granted a “location-specific” open work permit that does not have the requirement for getting a Labour Market Impact Assessment [LMIA] done. While all the job offers for a specific foreign national must be located within the same YNP community, the jobs might be either for the same or separate employers. The work to be done in the job offers must all reflect the same National Occupational Classification [NOC] code. |
There are 6 Yukon communities – Whitehorse, Dawson City, Carmacks, Watson Lake, Haines Junction and Carcross – participating in the Yukon Community Pilot.
A 3-year pilot, the Yukon Community Pilot will run from January 2020 until June 2023.
